Handmade Gilded Black Glass Dish
Handmade Gilded Black Glass Dish
This is an individually made glass dish, made from vintage opaque french glass which I fused in my Welsh studio. The individual pieces are fused together, but remain visible still, giving a lovely texture to the piece. I was inspired to make this by looking at a sweep of slate pieces that had fallen down a local mountain.
I love the way the light bouces around and through this piece and the look of the piece changes depending on its location in the room and the time of day.
Once fused, at around 800 degrees C in a process that takes about 24 hours, I then put it back in the kiln to slump the panel into a shallow dish shape. This takes another day.
Once cooled I then gild the underside of the piece. This is a piece for decoration rather than use, and you can consider putting it on a reflective surface so you get to see both sides at once.
Overall the piece is around 24cm by 10cm and 4cm high at the ends.
